In Kenya, an
orphan is defined as child under the age
of 18, who has lost one or both parents
as a result of death. It is estimated
that 11% of all children under 15 are
orphans (2003), compared with 9% in
1998. Up to 6 million Kenyan children
require special care and protection —
40% of the country’s total child
population.
20% of the Kenyan population is 6 years
and younger; and 48% of the population
is below 15. More than 53% of Kenyans
live in absolute poverty, which means
that 8.6 million live below the poverty
line. The poverty line is the equivalent
of $1.00 USD per day. |

30% of children under 5 are physically
stunted. Infant mortality is 77 per 1000
live births, and under 5 mortality is
115 per 1000 live births. Only 57% of
children between the ages of 12 months
and 23 months are fully vaccinated, and
malaria kills 26,000 children every
year.
