Dream Sponsors Vice President, Fiston Kahindo
Visits Sponsored Orphans in Kenya
After visiting four
other African countries, Fiston Kahindo wrapped up his two week tour of
Africa, in Kenya. Kahindo, who serves as Admissions Counselor for Lynn
University, was visiting the continent to recruit students for the
popular South Florida University, largely known for its international
student body. While in Kenya, Kahindo took some time to meet with Dream
Sponsors’ Project Volunteer Liaisons John Peter Bunguke from Nairobi and
Susan Otuma, from Bunyore’s Kenyan Advisory Committee. Kahindo also
spent time with each of the sponsored orphans in the various slums in
the city, assisting in the delivery of basic needs and food items for
the children. He was also able to personally meet the caretakers and
some of the school teachers and head master’s of the children.
Kahindo commented, “I
was extremely impressed by the motivation and sincere generosity of my
dear friend John Peter, a volunteer, who has donated countless hours of
his time and energy to make sure these orphan children have what they
need. He sincerely has the heart and passion needed to provide quality
work with the children and demonstrates a total investment in their care
and well-being.” He further explained the situation with Nairobi traffic
the excessive amount of time it takes to get anywhere within and outside
of the city. He also discussed the ongoing hard work and dedication of
the Volunteer Advisory Committee members and Project volunteer Liaison,
Meridinah Otuma working with the orphans in rural Western Kenya. “We are
so grateful for their commitment to our mission and to the well-being of
these orphans,” he concluded.
Fiston discovered the
children doing very well and improving in school while thriving in their
homes. He brought home letters from the children to deliver to their
sponsors, thanking them for the much needed support. One child, Sheila
writes, “Before this sponsorship, I used to suffer a lot, most of the
time I used to go to school without anything to eat or drink. I even
never used to work well in school because of lack of school fees. Being
an orphan, no body cares about you. But, by the grace of God, He opened
my way, because through my sponsor, my body changed and I am now a smart
girl. I never used to go to school trips, but through your sponsoring I
went for a trip and am doing better in my classes.”
One of the children,
Ryan, age 11, is suffering with a serious congenital heart condition
that was scheduled to be repaired when was 6 years old. However, his
father, who then had the resources to help him, died and then he also
lost his mother. Dream Sponsors is in the process of researching ways to
raise funds to help his aunt obtain the much needed surgery to repair
his heart condition and restore him to health. Another child is in need
of eye care. The needs of these children are tremendous, and many of
these most basic needs are things that we take for granted here in the
states.
The visit was a success
and Kahindo, although a bit jet-lagged,
did an outstanding job assuring that each child in our project is on the
way to making their dreams come true!!!! |
